We love us some Phat Man!
What a big love-a-dub! Phat Man was given a funny name to match his funny personality. He came into the shelter already neutered and acting as if he'd been a well-loved housepet at one point in his life. We're not sure what happened to make him homeless, but he's certainly very happy to have a team of people doting on him now while he waits for a new family. He's a little bit - ahem - tubby, but we think that just translates into more Phat Man to love. He's a low-key, middle-aged guy who's full of smiles and happy energy. Now learning his basic obedience lessons so he'll go home with good manners. No doubt he'd enjoy living with a cute girl dog and definitely kids. This here's a family dog.
Phat Man is part of the Ambassdog Project and living in a kennel at the Oakland Animal Services. For an appointment, contact Donna for: Phat Man

Binky is crate trained and knows how to settle in for a nap, but ready to go for a jog or to play fetch at a moment's notice. Her tail is ready to give a friendly wag to everybody she meets. Binky is enrolled in BAD RAP Pit Ed classes polishing up her manners and obedience skills. Ball Girl! (Movie)

ADOPTION PENDING: Retha
Pretty Retha is our newest girly dog in our Ambassadog kennels. She's got a stout little body, warm personality and just enough sass to make her irresistable. Sigh -- we just love the pit bull bitches. Retha is like most pit bulls and loves to be the center of attention. She wriggles, flirts, dances and generally does her best to impress her audience. She's learning all those important basic obedience skills and getting ready for a lifetime of changing minds. She's been approved to play with dogs at the shelter and we think she'll be able to share her life with a dog-savvy cat too. Nice! This is the kind of dog that inspires all of us to keep on rescuing.
Retha is part of the Ambassdog Project and living in a kennel at the Oakland Animal Services. For an appointment to meet Retha contact Donna for: Retha

AVAILABLE: Salvador
Big Pic
When Salvador, aka Mr. Sally, landed in the Oakland Animal Services, our hearts did a fast, loud pitter-patter. Yum! It didn't hurt that he looks just like a younger version of BR's canine founder, the vivacious Miss Sally. Sal is probably 3-4 years old. His favorite play buddy is Retha (above). He can pull those floppy lips back into a big fat smile when anyone coos in his general direction -- this one LOVES him some people. He's had some training; knows to Sit on command and gets very happy to see the leash. Our guess is that he was once well-loved in his former life. Right now he has a little limp in his front leg; we'll look into it to see what's going on. We look forward to setting him on the right path to being loved again.
Enjoy Sal's MOVIE
Sal is part of the Ambassdog Project and living in a kennel at the Oakland Animal Services. For an appointment to meet him contact Tim for: Salvador!
AVAILABLE: Willem
A sign of our times: Foreclosures have been taking a heavy toll on area dogs. Willem here was left behind when his people had to walk away from their home. Neighbors tell us that his family meant to come back to get him, but somehow it didn't happen. This guy has a tender soul - He acts like a soft-hearted puppy in a bigger dog's body. We're quite sure those lonely days tied up next to an empty house were hard on him. Our job is to help him find his self esteem while he waits at the shelter for his new people to bring him home and give him the longterm stability he deserves. He's getting an extra dose of cuddle time as well as basic obedience to help him anchor in.
Willem is part of our Ambassdog Project and living in a kennel at the Oakland Animal Services. For an appointment to meet Willem, contact Donna for: Willem.
AVAILABLE: Lolo
Big Pic Lolo is a gorgeous girl with warm eyes and a cool, velcro style. She's a victim of the foreclosure crisis and she left a crying owner behind to worry about her future. Shelter life was scary for her at first, but she quickly learned to look forward to all the PEOPLE who care for her there - Wow! She came to us with two bum knees - a death sentence for most shelter pit bulls. But we made the decision to fundraise and help this sweetheart get the surgery she needed to save her life. Thanks to the help of the ever-generous Dr. Richard Schwasch of Avenues Pet Hospital and the TLC of her foster home, Lolo has two new nearly-bionic knees ... Knees that should last her til the end of her days. Story She's so excited to begin a new life with a new forever family. Good with the dogs and cats in her foster home. This girl is confident and shamelessly slutty with all who meet her. She'll be a welcome addition to a lucky home.
For info contact Donna for: Lolo!
Available: Grace CGC!
Now a Canine Good Citizen Star ... Grace just earned her CGC award! This little 40lb weasle is part flirt, part spark-plug and part marshmallow. She's big on giving hugs...Her foster mom sez: "She will press her chest into your chest and twist her neck around yours and somtimes she will nibble your ears...best ever!" But she's no push over -- because she's uber-smart, sassy and excitable, we'd like to see her in a home that knows how to be a fair boss to a pushy little princess.
She is people focused and toy & treat motivated, which has helped her come along nicely in her ambassador manners. Plays well with her select dogs. here she is enjoying a playdate with Jonny Justice. Probably no cats for this one. She crates well, travels well and loves having a steady supply of chew toys. See her Movie & Slideshow
We sure do love this pretty creature. See Grace's second MOVIE.

Available: Zippy!
One of these two cuties is looking for new parents. Zippy is a vivacious little rascal now ready for her forever home. She's been living with 2 young kids and 2 other dogs while enjoying every single minute of life in foster care. True to her name, Zippy is a fast moving Party Machine. No such thing as a boring day with this girl around. She's a young dog (two+ years or so) and still needs a good amount of exercise. Her favorite activities are romping with her housemate dogs, running on her treadmill, or playing tag with the kids that adore her. She's smart, affectionate and as her foster mom says, "She fills the house with positive energy." Like so many of our girls, Zippy is dog selective. She's crate trained, house trained, spayed, microchipped and all the good stuff. Now attending our Pit Ed classes. See the video below for a peek into this pup's style. Zippy in Class: Video

AVAILABLE: Aberfoil!
Big Pic
He's a committed clown, part-time punk and a full-time comedian. Aberfoil is enjoying his adolescence and growing into a nice young dog (8-12 months) thanks to the Ambassadog Team's TLC and their daily school sessions. He would like to live with another dog and seems workable with the right cat. Because he's not a wall-flower, we'd like to see him in a home that has good 'parenting skills' and can set good limits. Interested parties are welcome to take Aberfoil on a test drive in our Pit Ed class on Saturdays in Berkeley.
Aberfoil is part of the Ambassdog Project and living in a kennel at the Oakland Animal Services. For an appointment to meet "Abies" contact Donna for: Aberfoil
ADOPTION PENDING: Goji
Goji is one of our Oklahoma dogs. She's a wee tiny thing with big doe eyes and nicely connected demeanor. She's practicing her new manners, learning about life in the big city and enjoying dog play dates as we get her ready to be adopted. Stay tuned for updates.
ADOPTION PENDING: Emmett
Big Pic If Emmett were a school kid, he'd wear horn-rimmed glasses and collect stamps for a hobby. This puppy is nearly six months old and although he can be socially awkward at times (Read: Nerd) he has brilliant play manners with other dogs and he loves to be snuggled and held. We'd prefer to place him in a home with another dog since he's big on the Buddy System. He's a small-sized dog with ultra-flashy Super Hero markings, funny ears and the prettiest little wedge-shaped head. He's a spitting image of his mama ... She's another Oklahoma cruelty bust survivor who was absorbed by Berkeley Animal Services. Here's a movie that shows them being reunited after landing in California. Hey! maybe they can be adopted together. Would that be cool? It's clear that Emmett will always be a little mama's boy.
For info contact Donna for: Emmett!
ADOPTED!: Ollie Pop
Meet our newest addition. Pit mix Ollie is a fine young fellow with an angel's heart. A good beginner's dog. We'll have a lot more to report once he settles in a bit. Bigger Pic.
AVAILABLE: TugTug
Big Pic TugTug came from an unhappy situation in Oklahoma He's decided that living indoors as a housepet is muuuch better than life on a chain. Who can blame him? TugTug is a 34lb Staffordshire Bull Terrier. If you know Staffys, you know that they have two speeds: 1. Sit and look adorable 2. Run as fast as possible in order to get to the next big adventure! He's called the "Cannonball Kid" in his foster home for that reason. TugTug plays with dogs that enjoy his style, and ignores the older dogs that would rather not be subjected to his youthful energy. He's crate-trained and is still mastering his basic obedience. Because he's from a world away, he's still learning how city life operates and will stop in his tracks to take in a new sight or sound. His new family will need to understand that he's still getting caught up on Life's lessons. It's incredibly gratifying to see a dog like this bloom and get happier by the day. Fantastic with all people and with smart management, we think he'll be workable with the right cat.
For info contact Donna for: TugTug!
News about Nelly
NOTE: Nelly's health is not good, so we've made the decision to give her a good life with us for as long as she's feeling okay. We would be open to finding a hospice situation where she can enjoy TLC and all the comforts a girl like her deserves.
Whoa Nelly! This darling little gargoyle girl was born without a nose. We brought her back from an Oklahoma cruelty bust expecting to let her go to peace after giving her a short compassion hold, but her spirit is so strong and bright that she's still with us. She's a tiny little thing with elfin ears and the warmest eyes you'll find. She's happy to live with other dogs but probably no cats. For details contact Tim about: Nelly!
ADOPTION PENDING: Squeeks !
We're excited to offer Squeeks for adoption. She's a young adult dog with warm brown eyes and a soft, uncomplicated demeanor. This one melts in your hands. We think she's a promising prospect for therapy work for all the qualities that make her so irresistable. Happy to play with dogs and ignored the cats and rabbits at the shelter. Sometimes shy, this little one would love an extroverted human to draw out her silly side in all situations. It won't take much; tickle her chin and watch her light up and smile. Now in foster care, Squeeks is a world class slipper thief and will prance around with her latest prize in her mouth. She's learned to ask to go outside to potty and she's ever so nice to the older female dog in the home. Her future home will treasure this little darling.
For info contact Linda for: Squeeks
ADOPTION PENDING: Fly Girl
Meet our new Ambassadog heart throb. Fly Girl is all that: She's smart, slutty and FUN. Her home should have as much confidence as she does so you can both be a well-oiled party team together. This girl loves herself some fast action fun; flirt poles and spring poles are her drug - that, and belly rubs. She's shamelessly social with all people but right now, she can be sassy with dogs, so needs a good boss to remind her that she's not the Queen of the Universe. We'll help her improve her dog social skills while she waits for a home. For more info contact Donna about: Fly Girl!
ADOPTION PENDING!: Daddy-O !
This sweet senior (8 years old?) is just too adorable. He landed in the very crowded Oakland Animal Services - those foreclosures are sure taking its toll. Due to a full house (and to be honest, his age), we'd decided to let him go. Nobody slept well the night before he was set to leave the planet and the next morning, everyone hustled to make space where none existed. A wonderful foster home soon appeared and now he's safe, getting settled in after a bit of bounce-around. Dog social in a big way, but no cats please. Low key, sappy sweet. He's a good reason we're addicted to the lovin' on the older dogs.
ADOPTED!: Bob the Dog
Bob is all about yummy. Dog social, boyish and well, he's just SUCH a Bob. Low key, super friendly and people focused with eye contact that goes on for miles. He's full grown as a medium sized dog (50lbs?) but we have to wonder if there's some mastiff in his family tree. Obedient, connected .. a real pleaser. This sensitive boy really wants to do the right thing so that you'll like him. Yes - we like him. Photo Sans-Goggles
ADOPTION PENDING!: Ernie
Ernie has been patiently watching while his friends go to forever homes, and now it's time to focus on this long-legged Dork Boy's future. This pit mix one silly guy, but - warning! - he has a way of making people snort milk out their noses while laughing at his goofie antics. He's not the most graceful guy but he's perfect just the way he is. Ernie lives with a pit mix female and tugs, wrestles and chases his days away while waiting for his forever home. He loves having a few dog friends and would be very happy in a home with other well-matched dog(s).
For info contact Linda for: Ernie
ADOPTION PENDING: Baby Howie!
Big Pic
Yes we know! - He sure looks a lot like an American Bulldog. But bless his heart, this bigger (68lbs) mixed breed boy is as soft-hearted as a lil'pup. Can you see the daisies floating around head? It's why his full name is really 'Baby Howie.' He's still young at nearly 2 years old and with a mushy, sweet nature that can melt the toughest of hearts. He came to us covered in a sticky substance like tar (the photo shows some of it still on his head), and was a bit rattled about whatever had recently transpired in his life. Baby Howie is getting the hang of being an Ambassadog, plays nicely with cute girlie dogs and walks beautifully with a loose leash. We'll be shining up his basic manners and plumping up his confidence in preparation for adoption. Check back soon.
ADOPTION PENDING: Frida Brown
Big Pic Frida is a mature girl with a most fantastic outlook on life. We should all take lessons from this dog. When we first met her at the shelter, she was surrounded by LOUD barking, jumping, leaping canines, but she was cool as a cucumber; all energies devoted to smiling sweetly up at us from the front of her kennel. She's had a disappointing ear crop and wears a large chemical burn on her side, but she's really not interested in dwelling on those insults. Life is meant for smiling, making friends and enjoying the good times. She's receiving training like all our dogs, but this girl's so grounded and low-key that she could easily smooth herself into the right new home without causing a fuss. A very special dog waiting to be a very special companion to some lucky human.
ADOPTION PENDING: Ha-Ha-Harley!
Big Pic Harley is a Dork with a capital 'D.' Very puppy-like attitude. Silly with dogs and even sillier with people. Someone forgot to tell this boy that he's probably two years old (instead of - ahem - three months old). We love him for his clownish optimism and affectionate charms. He would love to leave the shelter and become someone's best boy. Give us a yell if you want to meet him or the other residents of the AmbassaDog Program.
Here's Harley's MOVIE
ADOPTED: Kinzie!
Kinzie is an impish yearling and current heartthrob. She's a teenie-weenie at about 33lbs. Spirited, curious, optimistic, and a world class paw-thrower. She's doing well with her ambassador training and is learning about the joys of being a spoiled foster dog in between lessons. Dog social right now. We really like this cute little girl; She's a whole lotta FUN. Spayed, micro-chipped and all the good stuff.

ADOPTED!: Otter!
This little smarty pants just bounced into our program after a quick dash through Marin Humane Society. She's got everything we love in a pit bull and then some. Animal friendly, happy and spirited. Otter is an adolescent and is eating up her obedience lessons.

ADOPTION PENDING - Hey, Peter Mon!
Oh Peter! Since our sweet boy has been waiting for a home, he's become such a sensitive dude. Don't tell his homies, but he's changed his ways and has decided that he likes 'his' cats and he's become a world class HAM in Pit Ed Classes. Of course we can thank his devoted foster parents for bringing out the best in him. Photos: Foster Fun! They've been having a blast with Peter in their pack, but it's time for this Island Boy to plant his flag on home turf. Our sweet simple friend is a social butterful and despite his bouncy enthusiasm, he's beautifully trained. He's dog social and loves to romp with well-socialized dogs. He has a big round head that makes him look like something out of the Muppet Show. We believe that he's half pit bull and half American Bulldog. He's about 60 lbs with gorgeous red brindle markings.
He's affectionate, beautifully uncomplicated, and eternally HAPPY.
